The histories of Boston's sports franchises are no less storied and remarkable than that of the city itself. Few Americans would deny that although Boston has not always been the most formidable presence in major league sports, it has unquestionably become one of the great sports cities in the country. There's good reason for that well-deserved status. With championship franchises in each of the three biggest team sports leagues in America, it's little wonder that fans are jumping on the bandwagon.

It is a treasure trove of statistics, a testament to athleticism and just plain fun to watch. In 2010, there were a slew of great moments, made memorable by not only the players of the game but by the sequence of events that produced the moment and the reactions of those around them as it occurred. Of the hundreds of great plays, games, and records set, broken, and chased, the following five stand out from the rest for the 2010 baseball season.

Diamondbacks Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Kirk Gibson vows things will be different in his first season as the Diamondbacks' full-time manager.

No toy planes in the clubhouse. No toy guns. Pre-game time will be spent preparing for the job at hand. It may be only coincidence, but the players who most engaged in the faux gun fights were sent away either last year or this offseason.

"I mean, that's (expletive). How could you even think about it? Stuff like that is a thing of the past, trust me. If you want to go play toys, you are in the wrong spot," Gibson said at the winter meetings.

Model planes were the rage a couple of years ago, and Gibson saw it all as then-manager Bob Melvin's bench coach from 2007 until his promotion to manager on July 1, 2010.

"That won't be happening, either," Gibson said.

The Cubs' decision to bring back right-handed reliever Kerry Wood will have far-reaching implications for the pitching staff, and not just the bullpen.

Wood is expected to be the chief right-handed setup man to closer Carlos Marmol, alongside lefty setup man Sean Marshall. The Cubs liked the way Wood threw the ball in the Yankees' bullpen over the last two months of the 2010 season.

Where it gets interesting is with right-hander Andrew Cashner, a hard thrower who made his major league debut in May.

The Cubs switched Cashner from a starter to a reliever in the minor leagues before bringing him to the big club this year. However, there are many in the organization who believe Cashner's long-term future is as a starter.

When he turned down the Dodgers' deal, the team allowed him to become a free agent.

2010 was a bittersweet year for sports in the city of Dallas, in many regards. While researching a song to compare the Dallas' worst 2010 sports moments, I debated between a few options. The first song that came to mind was Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve, but after looking at the lyrics, they just didn't seem fitting. Then a song titled Bittersweet by a relatively unknown band by the name of the Hoodoo Gurus was brought to my attention, but it also didn't quite feel right.

Rangers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Posted on | Saturday, December 18, 2010 | No Comments

Ultimately, it wasn't Cliff Lee who decided not to sign with the Rangers. It was the Rangers who decided not to sign Lee.

Before Lee signed a five-year deal with Philadelphia, his agents contacted the Rangers and told them their client would remain with Texas if given a guaranteed seven-year deal. The Rangers, who had already pushed past their comfort zone with a six-year, $120 million offer that included an option for a seventh season, declined.

"It would have been a matter of saying yes on terms we weren't comfortable with," CEO Chuck Greenberg said. "He was willing to be with the Rangers, but it was beyond the aggressive parameters we were operating under. We didn't think it was in the best long-term interests of the organization.
