Armando Galarraga and Jim Joyce crossed paths again Friday. Joyce, the umpire whose blown call cost the Detroit Tigers pitcher a perfect game, was behind the plate for Galarraga's start against the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park. Both men tried to be low-key about the occasion, but they knew it would be difficult to put aside what happened June 2 in Detroit. That night, Joyce called Cleveland's Jason Donald safe on a play that should have been the 27th and final out of a perfect game by Galarraga.

It's impossible to talk about the San Diego Padres' 2010 season without using some variation of the word "surprise." As in, they were surprisingly good for so long that it's pretty surprising they've fallen so quickly. On Aug. 26, they had 76 victories and were -- surprisingly (OK, shockingly) -- tied with the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays in the loss column in the race for baseball's best record. When Labor Day arrived, they still had 76 victories.

For now, Gordon Beckham will play through the pain in his right hand. If the White Sox are eliminated, which now seems like a reality, the likely scenario is the team might simply shut him down for the rest of the season.
"It is what it is," the second baseman admitted on Wednesday. "It hurts, yeah. It bothers me more when I have to use my top hand a little bit. When I can just let the bat drop into place, it's OK because I don't really use a lot of my top hand, but the problem is I don't have much lag in my bat, I can't get out there and say, 'Oh, hold on,' and then go. It's more like I'm going and if it's not ... it's going to be a struggle from now until the end of the year because every day, the first 10 swings I take in batting practice are pretty painful.

Carl Crawford doesn't get thrown out on the bases very often.
And certainly not with a game on the line.

"I always make it on that play, that's why I went," Crawford said. "He made a good play. I probably should have been more aware, from what I heard he has a great arm. Although the Phillies have five games with division rivals in the next six days, it's difficult for them not to begin thinking about a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park next week that could go a long way into determining whether they will win their fourth consecutive National League East title.

It sounds as if the Phillies will juggle their rotation to align the threesome of Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt to pitch against Atlanta.
