In the eyes of most, the San Francisco Giants were fortunate to make it to the post-season, let alone advance to the World Series. The Giants barely snuck into the playoffs with a win over the San Diego Padres on the last day of the season to determine the final playoff spot in the National League. Once they arrived though, they played like a team who had been there before. They eliminated the Braves in four games, knocked out the two-time defending NL champion Phillies in five games to advance to the World Series for the first time since 2002.

In professional baseball, winning the Rookie of the Year award doesn't always mean that the winner will go on to have a distinguished and successful career. As a matter of fact, more often than not, the Rookie of the Year has become a role player and doesn't live up to the expectations of being the best first year player. With the awards ceremony right around the corner, I thought we could take a look at some of the ROYs that DID end up at the top at the end of their career.

The 25-year-old Ottavino, plagued by a shoulder issue that did not require surgery, was 0-2 with an 8.46 earned run average in five games with the Cardinals in 2010 after he had started the season at Memphis. Ottavino, who first experienced shoulder problems in 2008, never has pitched more than 144 innings in a season. Felix Hernandez scored a surprisingly easy win in the Cy Young Award, as members of the Baseball Writers Association of America sent 21 of the 28 first-place votes his way.

Hernandez won just 13 games, and lost 12 times, both of which are seriously ordinary numbers. But the 24-year-old wound up leading the league in innings pitched (249 2/3), ERA (2.27), quality starts (30) and opponents' batting average (.212), all of which is seriously extraordinary.

In 15 of his 34 starts, he allowed one run or none in at least seven innings, the best such performance in the AL, and he had 13 starts in which he allowed one or no runs while throwing eight or more innings.

What played against Hernandez was his win total.

The top 5 MLB teams for 2011 (Associated Content)

Posted on | Friday, November 19, 2010 | No Comments

Now that the 2010 Major League Baseball season has come to an end, it is time to look towards next year. The draft is not nearly important as, for example, the NFL's Draft, because players that are drafted into the major leagues hardly ever play in the majors during their first year. Free agency is the biggest factor in determining how a team will fare in the following season. Below is a list of the top 5 teams in MLB for 2011. No. 1 - New York Yankees: This should come as no surprise.

While commissioner Bud Selig has yet to formally propose adding two more wild-card teams, he said during the World Series that he was giving the plan serious consideration.

Rookie of the Year winners that went on to fantastic careers (Associated Content)

Indians Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

As the free agent signing season gets under way, the Indians have two glaring holes in their infield that may or may not be addressed through an addition or two. The Indians have question marks at second base and third base.

The hole at third is slightly larger than the one at second because the Indians do have some internal options at second. Jayson Nix, Jason Donald and Luis Valbuena all started games at second base in 2010 and would be candidates to play the position in 2011 should the Indians not go outside the organization for an upgrade.

The situation at third is more unsettled. Nix and Valbuena both played there in 2010, but neither played well enough, especially defensively, to suggest that he might be the long-term or even short-term answer at that position.

The exclusive, five-day window to negotiate with teams' own free agents came and went with little movement on the major league transaction wire. It wasn't an altogether surprising development in the Phillies' pursuit to keep All-Star right fielder Jayson Werth in red pinstripes.

Werth, a free agent for the first time in his career, will have no shortage of bidders for his services as arguably the top right-handed hitting player on the open market. Werth, who signed a two-year, $10 million contract two years ago, is likely looking at a deal similar to the seven-year, $120 million contract Matt Holliday received from the Cardinals last winter.

Werth, 31, hit .296 with 27 home runs, 85 RBI and a league-best 46 doubles in 2010.
