Braves Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Posted on | Sunday, November 6, 2011 | No Comments

General manager Frank Wren isn't shy about sending a message when he has to, and he wasted no time doing that during a meeting with the Braves' beat reporters after the season came to a screeching halt. As in this response to a question about right-handed starter Derek Lowe's status next season:

"It's hard to project him as one of our starters at this point," Wren said, "based on the young talent we have."

Young talent, by the way, that Wren is not looking to use in trades. And he didn't need Lowe blocking the rookies' path. So on Halloween, the Braves agreed to eat $10 million of Lowe's $15 million 2012 salary and traded him to the Indians for left-hander Chris Jones, who pitched at Class A Kinston last season.

Brewers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

During the regular season, the Brewers' much improved starting pitching covered all of the team's flaws. The pitching allowed them to get away with substandard defense throughout the season as well an inconsistent offense, in particular the bottom of the lineup.

It was only when that starting pitching finally faltered that the Brewers were eliminated in the NLCS by St. Louis in six games. The starters compiled an 8.10 ERA during those six games, with only left-hander Randy Wolf (seven innings, two runs in Game 4) turning in a solid start.

Over the course of the 162-game season, the pitching was solid enough for the Brewers to win a franchise-record 96 games and claim their first NL Central title.
