The annual migration of Major League Baseball teams to Florida and Arizona is an event we know as spring training. Baseball's spring training traces its roots all the way back to the 1800s. Back in 1870, the Chicago White Stockings and Cincinnati Red Stockings held camps in New Orleans to get ready for the upcoming season. Spring training was officially declared a "ritual" in 1900 as teams spent a month in the winter in small communities in the south to train and be evaluated by managers.

Nationals Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

For all intents and purposes, the Nationals know who is going to be on their Opening Day roster in 2011. There are a couple spots that are still up for grabs—the second catcher and a backup infielder, for example—but the team mostly knows what it will have.

The Nationals believe they have upgraded their defense and are going to allow fewer runs than they did in 2010. But it remains to be seen if their offense will be any better. And at the top of their lineup, the Nationals still have some questions to sort out.

Nyjer Morgan heads into the 2011 as the Nationals' likely leadoff hitter, but he struggled last year, posting a .253 average and .319 on-base percentage. The Nationals believe he can rebound to his career averages (.283 and .344, respectively), but they...

When a sports fan moves to a new city, he usually packs up his allegiances and takes them along. I discovered this about 12 years ago in my hometown of Chicago. These were flags from such "countries" as Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, even as far away as Alabama and California. They hailed strange leaders such as the Spartans, the Buckeyes, the Hawkeyes, the Golden Gophers and the Badgers.

The Astros, like the 29 other major league teams, spent the offseason to some extent building for April. However, perhaps more than any other team, Houston spent the free agency portion of the offseason bracing for January.

The week from Jan. 18-25 is arguably the most important of the offseason for the Astros, who intentionally did very little in free agency. With five arbitration-eligible players due raises, that period was when most of their uncommitted dollars were going to be shelled out, and it started just minutes before the deadline for exchanging arbitration figures.

Center fielder Michael Bourn signed the biggest deal of the trio that beat the deadline, getting $4.4 million for his signature on a one-year contract.

The Rangers will have a former Cy Young Award winner wearing No. 33 after all next season -- Brandon Webb instead of Cliff Lee. Three weeks after losing Lee in free agency, the AL champions on Monday finalized a $3 million, one-year deal with the 2006 NL Cy Young winner, who hasn't pitched since the 2009 season opener after shoulder surgery.

Overview Spring is a short couple of months around the corner, which means that baseball is almost ready to revisit us. That said, we will be visiting the New York Yankees spring training program and schedule for the 2011 season. Why the New York Yankees? They are my favorite team because of the legacy that they have forged not only in baseball, but in America.

One big one down, three to go.

The Reds, not surprisingly, avoided going to arbitration with their reigning National League MVP, first baseman Joey Votto, by agreeing to a three-year, $38 million contract.

The deal takes Votto through his final three years of arbitration eligibility before he can become a free agent.

As the Tuesday deadline to exchange numbers approached, the Reds still had three unsigned arbitration-eligible players. Right-handers Johnny Cueto and Edinson Volquez and left-hander Bill Bray all are arb-eligible for the first time.

"We haven't made much progress lately," Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said recently.

Jocketty would not comment on whether the Reds were talking about deals of longer than one year.

The Rays made the deals to trade veterans Jason Bartlett and Matt Garza because they could, not because they had to.

Team officials said the deals were not made strictly to dump the approximate $11 million in salary the two veterans would have received this season but were a way to maximize team resources, turning a surplus at the big-league level into a haul of prospects.

For the two players, acquired from Minnesota in the same November 2007 deal, the Rays got nine players, which will allow them to replenish their farm system and rebuild their bullpen.

"We have to maximize our resources," executive vice president Andrew Friedman said.

Team president Matt Silverman acknowledged that sacrificing depth has become part of that equation.
