During the regular season, the Brewers' much improved starting pitching covered all of the team's flaws. The pitching allowed them to get away with substandard defense throughout the season as well an inconsistent offense, in particular the bottom of the lineup.

It was only when that starting pitching finally faltered that the Brewers were eliminated in the NLCS by St. Louis in six games. The starters compiled an 8.10 ERA during those six games, with only left-hander Randy Wolf (seven innings, two runs in Game 4) turning in a solid start.

Over the course of the 162-game season, the pitching was solid enough for the Brewers to win a franchise-record 96 games and claim their first NL Central title.
