It's probably the only benefit, and not a benefit they wanted. By falling out of playoff contention, the Dodgers are able to spend September giving more at-bats and innings to players who otherwise wouldn't be playing as often.
One is catcher A.J. Ellis, who enjoyed the best three days of his professional career over the weekend, and prompted Rockies manager Jim Tracy to say, "We didn't get A.J. Ellis out the entire series."
Technically, they got him out once.
On Friday, Ellis singled, doubled twice and grounded out. On Saturday, he singled three times off Ubaldo Jimenez and walked. On Sunday, entered in the 11th inning, and hit the walk-off single to cap a comeback from a 6-1 deficit.
Dating back to a three-hit game on Aug.
